50 Year Member Tony Swann It is hard to capture a lifetime of memories in just a few paragraphs. The AAC/Swann journey began in the early sixties when my father (JP) and mother (Eleanor) joined the Club and has extended three generations. My earliest memories include swim lessons from Buzz McGriff at East Lake, being chased out of the men’s locker room in the downtown club after swimming in the indoor pool and Sunday fried chicken dinners at the Yacht Club. Family activities shifted north in the early seventies when the Club moved to unincorporated Fulton Couty in what was originally called Riverbend. I think somewhere in storage I have a pool towel, which I won’t be returning, that has the name Riverbend. Most of our family time was spent on the tennis courts where my parents, sister Eleanor, and I experienced various levels of success. It is always a heart tug when I pass by mother’s plaque on the wall with the other AAC Hall of Fame inductees. Also, my father, who passed away in 2020, is buried with his “AAC 50-Year” pin on his lapel. After graduating from UGA in the early eighties, I reconnected with the Club with a renewed interest in tennis and thoroughly enjoyed the Thursday night basketball league inclusive of jerseys (I have one that won’t be returned either), referees, an electronic scoreboard and player stats posted on the bulletin board of the health club. The nineties brough about change with a new passion for golf that burns to this day which embarrassingly (or proudly) includes 117 rounds of golf in 2024. I cherish all the friends I’ve made on the golf course, in the Interlachen and in the men’s grill (back room of course). All while battling maturity issues, which proudly persist to this day, I was able to introduce a third generation of Swann’s to the AAC. My wife Lara discovered a love for tennis and became heavily involved in the tennis community. I became known as Lara’s husband! My son Jamie and daughter Cameron enjoyed the summer camps, swimming and eating hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches. Although I don’t often agree with the decisions made by our Club’s leadership, the AAC remains a place of sanctuary and I’m truly blessed to drive through its gates. I’m well into the third quarter of my life but know there are many more AAC memories to be made. Thank you AAC.

Mrs. Meghan Sawyer and her husband Trent Associate Jones Membership Sponsors: Dr. Kristina Dawson, Mr. Garrett McLendon, Mrs. Caitlin Gouws Mrs. Sawyer is a Nurse Practitioner and currently a homemaker. She received her bachelor’s degree in Advertising at the University of Georgia and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Nursing at Emory University. Mr. Sawyer is Senior Director, Category Strategy and Operations at the Coca Cola Company. He received his bachelor’s degree at Southern Methodist University and his degree in Business/Entrepreneurship at the University of Pennsylvania. They live in Atlanta with their four children.

Ms. Marina Rupp Associate Heisman Membership Sponsors: Mr. Alex Marchetti, Mr. Raymond Russo, Mr. Ian Culling Ms. Rupp is a Business Development Manager at Intertek. She received her bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Grand Valley State University and her MBA at the University of Michigan. She lives in Duluth.

Opening Day The 2025 WGA 9-Hole Opening Day was a stunning success, with a beautiful sunny day setting the tone for a fantastic vintage-themed event. We revisited the past with our on-course contests, featuring a closest-to-the-pin challenge on the putting green using a historic Calamity Jane putter and a longest drive competition utilizing classic persimmon drivers. Sandra Campbell emerged victorious in the putting contest by skillfully sinking a challenging downhill putt. Katherine Malone secured the longest drive on hole one, while Debbie Patterson claimed the longest drive on hole eighteen. There was intense, fun competition on the nine's for the team scramble. Coming in second place on the front nine at a Net 26 (-9), the team of Susan Moon, Kathy Halligan, Mary Aguilar, & Judy Elder. The winning team of the front nine at a Net 25 (-10), was Sam Rhodes, Gail Laney, Carmen Leach, & Melissa Clary. The team of Amanda Tyler, Rebecca Butler, Kelly Hanley, & Nita Scartz came in second place for the back nine with a Net 27 (-9). The back nine winners were Kimberly Murray, Debbie Patterson, Patty Hoffman, & Cheryl Johnson at a Net 25 (-11). A big “Thank you” to our amazing Opening Day Committee, Ada Clough, Kathy Weisberg, Amanda Tyler and Elizabeth Dickens who delivered a great kickoff to our 2025 season!

Ladies Bridge Association Each month on the second and fourth Wednesdays, ladies meet in the Dot Kirby Card Room for a fun-filled afternoon of Round Robin Bridge. Each player puts $5 in the pot to be distributed at the end of play. Each table plays four hands after which the winners stay at the same table and the losers move to the next and swap partners making it a great way to socialize with lots of different people while playing. Special prizes are awarded to anyone who bids a slam and makes it and the one at the end of play who is the last to take a trick with a two. The pot pays out the three highest winners and the one with the lowest score. The balance of money is distributed by a random drawing. It’s three hours of fun whether you win or lose!

Friday Pickleball Socials May 2 and 16 | June 6 and 20

The pickleball social kicks off with a little warm up time and quick intro to the rules before we go into the first round of pickleball play. It’s all about fun, so rules are relaxed, and participants are encouraged to cheer for each other, offering helpful tips and light-hearted banter. The focus isn’t just on winning but on having a great time and making sure everyone gets a chance to play. After each round, people head back to the snack table for a quick bite or drink, share laughs, and mingle with new friends before diving into the next match.

Please remember that under Georgia State Law, we are only permitted to have children in the Timbers for no more than 4 hours a day/ 10 hours a week. In case of an audit by the state, we could lose our permit to operate if we are not following these rules. This does not apply to “Events,” such as TGIF which is why we are trying to offer more events in lieu of drop-in care, so you are able to utilize the Timbers even more! While we understand certain circumstances will arise from time to time, and we are willing to give some grace, there will be a $20 fee per occurrence if these hours are regularly being exceeded.
