The Gentlemen’s Par 3 Summer League has been a hit! 168 gentlemen are playing on 14 teams every Wednesday. This has been a great addition to the event calendar with its emphasis on fun and meeting fellow members. The League will conclude with a shoot-out in August to determine the overall champion for this inaugural event that is sure to be a mainstay on the calendar. The Ladies Operation 36 development program continues to be strong introducing new ladies into the game and being a solid base of instruction for returning golfers. The Operation 36 model teaches the game from the green back to the tee. This lower barrier to entry focuses on smaller shots at the beginning and makes the
The Golf Operation has been in full swing this summer. New initiatives have been positively received by the membership, play on Highlands has been strong, and participation in junior programming continues to be sold out. Celebrating significant milestones of employment, Golf Instructor, Jimmy Harris, has just celebrated 20 years of service, and John “Coach” Koch 10 years. We are grateful for the continued professionalism and contributions Jimmy and “Coach” make to the membership on a daily basis. New members of the golf operations team are Aidan Rice, serving as an Assistant Golf Professional, and Michael Bashlor, as Golf Professional Starter.

• Recording scores for handicap purposes. The Handicap Committee has begun the initiative of sending members a reminder-to-post email if they do not post a score the same day by 8:00 p.m. This has resulted in a 23% increase in scores posted. Lastly, thank you to the entire membership for their cooperation during the Riverside course renovation. The tee time lottery system has been working fairly, while course occupancy has been at 93% +. We are excited and looking forward to the re-opening of Riverside. Bud and his team are working on plans for the re-opening, and maximizing member use on the course. game more fun to learn. The spring semester recently concluded with 151 ladies participating. In the first year of offering Operation 36 at AAC, more than 300 ladies have participated.
Stewardship continues to be of the highest priority at AAC, and that is no different in the golf operation. Member cooperation is vital for the club to enhance a culture that is welcoming and comfortable for all. The areas of particular importance are: • Care for the course. Filling divots with sand, repairing ball marks on the greens, and raking bunkers are important to a well- maintained course. • Pace of Play. A large portion of the members’ experience while on the golf course is the speed with which everyone plays. Please remember, “Your place on the course is behind the group in front of you, not in front of the group behind you.” Another great phrase to remember is, “Play well, play fast. Play poorly, play faster.”

CONGRATULATIONS TO DAVID FORD Southern Amateur Champion
Atlanta Athletic Club Member, David Ford won the 2022 Southern Amateur by 3 strokes on Saturday, July 16 at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons, Georgia. Ford, who was ranked number 18 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings before the tournament, joins fellow AAC members Bobby Jones, Watts Gunn, Tommy Barnes, Charlie Harrison, Scott Dunlap, and Danny Yates on the list of Southern Amateur Champions.

Re-Instating a New Tradition YATES CUP MATCH 2022 In 2018, the Inaugural Yates Cup Match between Atlanta Athletic Club and Royal Troon Golf in 1938. He made such a positive impression with his kind nature and contagious smile that he was gifted an Honorary Membership.
Club was hosted in Johns Creek, Georgia; and in July of 2022 Scotland returned the favor. While the match was originally intended to occur every two years at alternating locations, Royal Troon Golf Club had to wait two years more to host due to COVID. “These traditions between the AAC and overseas golf clubs are unique and special,” says Atlanta Athletic Club Member and Yates Cup participant, Jack Vance. “We have a long history of fostering golf relationships with historical golf clubs around the world, and it’s an honor to represent the AAC and continue to promote our great club.” The inspiration behind this intercontinental competition begins with the clubs’ mutual appreciation for Charlie Yates – a friend, protégé, and young contemporary of Bobby Jones. As an Atlanta local and Georgia Tech graduate, Yates was just as well known for his good heart as he was for his golf game. Not only did he compete in the first ever Masters Tournament in 1934, but after retirement he committed much of his time to fundraising and leadership roles throughout the growing Atlanta arts community, supporting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and what would later be known as the Woodruff Arts Center. Yates gained popularity overseas after he won the British Amateur Championship at Royal Troon
July’s Atlanta Athletic Club 10-man team featured Bruce Barfield, Jack Vance, Kevin Costello, Davis Stewart, Richard Grice, Steve Craine, DeWitt Weaver, Don Allen, Mike Manning, and Chris Bachelder. At the end of the week, Atlanta Athletic Club remained Yates Club Match Champions, but the trophy will remain at the Royal Troon due to its extended stay in Johns Creek over the last three years.. “It’s cool, wet and windy. High temperature for our week is 60-65 Fahrenheit with 10- 25 mph winds. Challenging,” said Vance in anticipation of their visit to Royal Troon. “But, the camaraderie from this event is what it’s all about!” For each competition, the matches consist of foursome and fourball matches.
Nine-Hole Golf News A scorcher for a summer this year, we’ve seen some incredible play days and tournaments for June and July. Thank you to our Grounds Crew committee members Gloria Kerns & Kathy Halligan and our Summer Sizzle Committee Members Melissa Clary, Lee Kidney, & Kimberly Kephart for planning such wonderful summer events! We look forward to our championship coming up in September!
9HWGA President Kathy Halligan toured the new course with Lukus in July as part of the Riverside Committee and was able to provide us an in-depth report of the vistas, and bunkers, “We got a really good look at the new bunker designs throughout the course and they are superior in every way - easy to walk in and out of to play your ball. There are fewer and more strategically placed bunkers, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but they are beautiful!”

THE YACHT CLUB In 2023, Atlanta Athletic Club will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The club was founded in 1898 by a group of 65 Atlanta businessmen who enjoyed playing sports and social activities. This article is the ninth in a series entitled “125 Years: The Legacy of Atlanta Athletic Club.” The purpose of the series is so that members may become familiar with the history and heritage of the great club to which they belong.
The Atlanta Athletic Club’s move north to Duluth in the 1960s was part of a century-long trend of suburbanization. The AAC opened the East Lake facility in the early twentieth century as a country retreat, just as prosperous Atlantans were looking for rural enclaves in which to enjoy recreation and fresh air. Many were responding to a major population shift that affected urban areas between 1900 and 1920. During this period, the population in cities grew by 80 percent. Overcrowding, pollution, and crime prompted older and wealthier residents to seek refuge in places like East Lake, one of Atlanta’s first suburbs. East Lake primarily served the AAC’s summer residents, as well as members, who, with limited access to transportation and good roads, lived relatively close by. With the advent of the interstate highway system, begun during Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidency, many of the club’s members began to move out of the city, distancing themselves from the golf course, lake, and changing demographics of the neighborhood. The prosperous northern suburbs of Marietta, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Dunwoody, Alpharetta, and Duluth—called the
Golden Crescent by developers —became home to many AAC members. Suburbs, at first, were isolated from the city center and had few of the services available to city dwellers. But that quickly changed, and clean streets, new schools, and large houses made them some of the most desirable places to live. In this context the membership elected to relocate the AAC. The members who remained in or near the city continued to enjoy the amenities of the downtown club and East Lake; those who moved north began to call for an accessible facility that would serve their recreational needs. In 1958, the AAC opened the Yacht Club at Lake Lanier to accommodate the latter group. The decision to do so is best understood as a compromise. At the time, there was some debate about whether the club should build a third course north of Atlanta. Charlie Elliott pointed out that the Yacht Club was intended “as a peace move to bring the two factions together by giving the northsiders a facility and keeping East Lake intact.” What began as little more than a casual suggestion
quickly became a reality. The Club Times reported on October 15, 1957: “When the Lake Lanier property is completely developed, it will give our Atlanta Athletic Club accommodations unsurpassed by any other club in the nation with a beautiful City Club, a comfortable Country Club with two first-rate golf courses, and the Lake Lanier area. Certainly all members agree that AAC membership is the most valuable that can be had in this or any other city.” Built along Lake Sidney Lanier, Buford Dam was a U.S. Corps of Engineers project intended to block the Chattahoochee and Chestatee rivers with the intention of establishing the thirty-nine-thousand- acre Lake Sidney Lanier, named for the Georgia poet. Before the lake was filled, the AAC, under the leadership of Ira H. Hardin, who joined the AAC board in 1953, was given the task of locating waterfront property to establish a marine facility for the club. Responsibility for purchasing the land rested with T. R. “Dick” Garlington, who served as AAC president in 1947–1948, and he took from the estate of A. H. Holland an option on two tracts of land on the east side of the lake—a long, sloping hillside on the Big Creek side of the lake and a wooded cove near the mouth of Flowery Branch Creek. The club finally settled on the Flowery Branch site and eventually purchased additional land for a total of fifty acres. The Charles M. Graves Company was hired as the landscape architect to develop the facility, and William H. “Bud” Walters, who had served for six years as maintenance engineer for the downtown club, was hired to manage it. The Yacht Club formally opened in July 1958 and soon became known for a series of events throughout the year— the Fourth of July Barbeque, Pass-in-Review, the Labor Day Country Dinner and Square Dance, the Cast-Off Party, the Mystery Island Party, and the Shipwreck Party. Mike Hale, who grew up at the Yacht Club, fondly remembered the ring toss in the clubhouse: “It was a steel washer on a string, and there was a hook on the wall. Every kid that grew up in the Athletic Club would run to the Yacht Club restaurant to swing that washer. It would keep us kids busy for hours.” Hal A. Cook became the first commodore in 1957, and membership grew to two hundred by 1966. In the
1970s, though, the economy was faltering, inflation was increasing, and the nation found itself in the midst of an energy crisis. Tom Forkner explained how the Yacht Club managed to grow in these lean economic times: “At a board of directors meeting, we discussed how much the Yacht Club needed new slips. But we didn’t have the money. One member offered to pay for the additions, allowing the club to pay them back when they could. Times were tough.”

Ladies Bridge Association What an exciting year it has been in the Bridge room!
Over the past year we have had 22 new players of all ages join the game after a 6-week beginners bridge class offered at the Club. To support the beginners, a dedicated team of experienced bridge players, organized by Mare Mills, have been voluntarily mentoring the newbies every Tuesday at 2:30. This is a great format to practice and advance the skills of the new players. It is an amazing opportunity to better learn the game in a casual atmosphere with helpful guidance! Some of the newbies have even advanced to play in Social bridge with the veterans at the club. This is an informal playdate biweekly on Wednesdays. Fun and prizes led by Beachie Hall. Marathon bridge, led by Melissa Dickens, an organized monthly format with a set partner has also increased in participation from 16 partners to 20 pairs. Marathon runs from August through March. Another great competitive venue to increase your skill and get to know others. Cynthia Tanner organizes
Duplicate bridge and Karen Smith is responsible for Couples bridge. Duplicate is played bi-weekly, and couples enjoy an evening of bridge followed by dinner monthly. Tennis Tip THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE? We all know that the overhead smash can be a powerful kill-shot in any tennis player’s arsenal, but if you are on the receiving end, overheads do NOT have to signal the end of the point. Everyone knows a skittish partner who will tuck-tail and run for cover as soon as the threat of an overhead arises. Don’t be that player! Overheads are often difficult to judge, to move to, and to execute, and they can leave the hitter in a vulnerable position. Their eyes must refocus on the court after looking straight up to find the ball, and they are [hopefully] further from the net than when they started. This creates opportunity for the receiver! When you are defending an overhead, take a couple of steps back to give yourself a little extra time, and then do your best to block the ball RIGHT BACK to the person who just hit it. You will often find them unprepared and out of position. Turn their offensive shot back on them. Show them that you aren’t scared and surprise them with a quick return!
