Good Stewards of Golf A Letter From Your Golf Chair
Dear Member, Spring is here! What a
• The lottery system will only permit one golf course to be selected for the lottery. • If you do not receive a tee time on the course you selected, you may be moved to the other golf course as a courtesy. Being moved to the other course is also a points-based system. STEWARDSHIP The care we each take as stewards of the Club’s assets is very important. One of the most significant assets the Club owns is the golf courses. Great lengths and significant resources are committed each year to ensure great course conditions. Although we have a tremendous Golf Course Maintenance Team, we need to make sure we are doing our share. Please be mindful of filling your divots with sand, picking up tees, repairing ball marks, and raking bunkers. In closing, I want to wish everyone a fantastic golf season. Please know your Golf Committee and Board of Directors are committed to providing you with the highest quality experiences and facilities possible. Fairways & Greens, Jim Kiker AAC Golf Chairman
wonderful time of year it is. Fresh off an exciting Masters Tournament, it is easy to get excited about the game. Here at AAC, there is much to be excited about as well. With the reopening of the Riverside Course, we have more tee
time availability and a full complement of tournaments and events to participate in. In addition, your Golf Committee and Board of Directors have been focused on your member experience and the role we all play in the stewardship of the club. LOTTERY SYSTEM FOR TEE TIMES The demand for play on the golf courses has been high. AAC utilizes a computerized points-based lottery system to determine who receives tee times. The points-based lottery system has been initiated to ensure that equal and fair distributions of tee times are accomplished. Below are some very important items to be aware of regarding the tee time lottery system. • To increase the likelihood of receiving a tee time, make the time you are available to play as wide as possible. • Canceling or not showing up for a tee time within 24 hours will make receiving a future tee time more difficult. The tee time system will automatically assign points to a member(s) who cancels or no shows a tee time. The more points you have, the more difficult it is to receive a tee time. Points are determined on a rolling 14-day average.
ABOUT THE COVER The cover design borrows elements of the 1950’s Club Times design which featured both clubhouses.
Membership Updates Davis & Kay Stewart Wow, time really flies. I joined the AAC as a junior member in 1973. At that time, there was not much out by the Club. Dad and I would take a sack lunch to have after golf ! When I graduated from UGA in 1980, my Dad said “that’s it. This is your choice to continue your membership and PAY for it.” Kay and I had just been married and we didn’t have 2 nickels to rub together. The advice from Dad was if you can swing it, the AAC will be a wonderful place to raise your family and it will be an ideal place to build long lasting relationships. Needless to say that was a wonderful piece of advice. My time at the AAC holds a special place in my life. There were many experiences; some funny, some educational and some sad. I was scared to death of Jim Britt our head starter. Come to find out I think everybody was scared of him. However, he taught me how to be on time! David Sheppard (when he was Club Manager) will remember a time when I hosted a private party that got out of hand, that turned into me receiving a call from him for damages the next morning! On a sad note, my Dad suffered a life ending heart attack at the young age of 74 at the Guard Gate. Chris Borders says that’s why we installed AED machines all over the Club. Both of my brothers are members of the Club and we cherish the legacy he and Mom provided for us. At 94 Mom still uses the Club. I was honored to be on the AAC Board and serve a term as President and Chairman from 2006 to 2012, I credit many on the Club staff with teaching me important lessons of life and the lub industry. People like Chris B., Margaret A., Tony, Roxanne, Mary, Erica, Rod, Margaret T., Neil, Craig, Jimmy H., Chris M., Martin and the list goes on. You folks are like family! My golfing friends are not only good friends but good people. When you are an average golfer like me, you learn that’s it’s not about where you play but who you play with!!! Oh and by the way, have I mentioned that real men do Pilates… Give it a try, it will change your life! Kay and I look forward to many more wonderful years at the AAC!

2023 - 24 Tennis Committee We are blessed to have the leadership of our tennis committee lead by Kevin Case and Randy Moore for the upcoming year. They are both avid tennis players and will be representing the tennis department at the board level. We also are excited to have Tory Whipple, Connie Lussier, Debi Doverspike, Nancy Geraghty, Caroline Dorsey, Robert Luskin, Tim Klespies, Edward Koller, Alex Marchetti, and Dave Strickland serve on the committee. I am excited about the start of the new year and all we have planned for the year. These volunteer members are representing you and I hope you will support them as we go through the year.
Memorial Day Davis Cup Challenge May 29 at 9 a.m. This is an exciting tennis event where players are assigned to a team representing a Davis Cup country. You will compete at your level against players of like ability. Doubles and mixed doubles will play in a flexible round robin format. Each game won by competitors will go towards the total team score. Play begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at noon, allowing time for you to attend and be ready for other key club events. The cost for this year’s event is $45 per person. Hurry to register as this event continues to be a sell-out! Visit our website’s event calendar to register or call the Tennis Center 770-368-7740.
AUGUST 17 and 18 This event format is a one-day event, however due to its popularity, we host different flights (levels) on two separate days. The experience is the same for both days, fun competitive tennis, and a fabulous luncheon, with both days starting at 9 a.m. The LTA Member/Guest is one of our most popular events and is always a sellout. We want to thank, in advance, our Ladies Tennis Association leaders who make it such a success every year. Get ready and find a partner for this year’s LTA Member/Guest. We encourage all levels to participate. Registration for both events will open June 17 on the club’s event calendar beginning at 8 a.m.

Start playing today! Let’s get on the courts! Whether you are a total novice or have that competitive edge, let me help you enhance your doubles game. Register for the following classes. These classes run for six consecutive weeks. You receive a free Tennis racquet and 2 complimentary hours of ball machine usage when you join Tennis 101. Tennis 101 Provides the introduction to the sport of tennis. Learn proper grip, stance, ground stroke, technique, volleys, overheads, and serves. Tennis 201 Works on live ball, interaction, doubles strategy, and tactics. These will help prepare those who aspire to join a team at AAC. Would you like to take a lesson on Sunday? Wendy Fox is available on Sundays for private, semi-private or group lessons for adults and juniors. To schedule please call us at 770-368-7740 or contact Coach Wendy at WMF@aac1.org. She joined our Professional Tennis staff in February of this year. Tennis tip byCoach Wendy Fox Early Racket Preparation. “Timing is everything.” Just like having an accurate toss on a serve is critical, so is swinging the racket back early on a forehand or on a backhand in order to hit the ball in a timely manner. By executing the shot early, we can achieve many factors. 1. More power. 2. More control. 3. More depth. 4. More consistency, leaving less margin for errors.

What an exciting weekend on March 17 & 18 with our 8th High School Invitational presented by Piedmont Bank. This event brought together five local public high schools and one out of state program to compete for
the championship. This event has turned out to be the kids’ favorite event due to the play format. The schools competing this year were: Cambridge, Milton, Norcross, West Forsyth, Alpharetta, and Greenwood HS from Kentucky. West Forsyth is our 2023 Champion, defeating Norcross High School in the very last match. Thank you again to Piedmont Bank for their support in making this event such a success. AAC Junior Development Tennis Program Our after-school tennis programs will continue through May. As busy as May gets with reaching the end of the school year. We require and appreciate a 48-hour notice that your children will be attending this month for proper staffing and planning our clinics. Summer Camps The Tennis camp will be a continuation of the after-school program. The kids will be divided up by levels. The mornings will be focused on the development of strokes, learning patterns, and fitness. The afternoon will be 100% match play focusing on executing the patterns they learn in the mornings. We will also be having matches against other country clubs and possibly academies as well. Coaches for the summer at this moment are all college players that were top 5 or 10 in their respective countries which include Argentina, France and Switzerland. The Sports camp will be a mix of Tennis, Soccer, Basketball and Pickleball. This will provide a good base for athletic development by learning to track different balls, hand-eye/ foot-eye coordination and catching and throwing. All of which are part of the junior tennis development program. Camps are offered as half-day, full day or weekly. Pricing varies depending on your participation choice.
