Opening Up & Moving Forward A Letter from the House Committee Chairman

One of the great annual Atlanta Athletic Club traditions is upon us – the July 4th Spectacular. Hundreds of our member families will gather for our patriotic celebration of the birth of our great nation while celebrating in grand AAC style! I hope you all enjoy the amazing games and fun with the kids, the fantastic food and our unparalleled entertainment. Thankfully, this summer looks vastly different than what we

faced last summer.

For over a year, we have had to find new methods of service and entertainment for the members of the Atlanta Athletic Club - and even at times having to shut down completely for the good of our health and community. Through it all, the resiliency of our dedicated staff and membership have kept the spirit of the Club going through every twist and turn of 2020 and beyond. For this reason, among many, I will particularly enjoy celebrating this July 4th at the AAC!

As we reopened the Club last year, we adopted a methodical approach to crawl before we walked and then walk before we run. Those intentional steps towards normalcy are at last being rewarded by a summer worth celebrating! We have successfully hosted an assortment of indoor and outdoor events such as our Bourbon and Cigar Dinner,

In October 2020, Chef DaRin prepared a beautiful open air, Farm to Table Dinner in the 1898 House

live music nights in the Interlachen Lounge and, of course, crowning a winner at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Our restaurants are returning to regular hours as we continue to increase our rate of employment for wait and kitchen staff. The Royal Troon Grill, Interlachen Lounge, and Men’s Grill have returned to regular hours within the Clubhouse with to-go options still available. Members enjoying our golf courses and pool can now enjoy the menus we offer at our Halfway House and our Pool Pavilion. We will be opening the Troon Grill for additional dinner service on Tuesday July 13th. We continue to work towards being able to open the Merion Dining room and hope to have an update soon on its reopen date. I appreciate your patience to this point and thank you in advance for your support of our staff and numerous events as we continue to resume our normal pace of operations. I hope you’ll use your app to sign up for your favorite events early and I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

Sincerely, Jason Huggins House Committee Chairman

Happy 4th of July! FROM THE ATLANTA ATHLETIC CLUB!

The Complex Movement of a Golf Shaft During the Swing

By: John Breedlove, PGA Professional If you have been around the game for any length of time, you have probably heard someone tell you how important it is to get fit for the right shaft. What you may not have been told is…Why it’s so important. Well, during the swing, a golf shaft undergoes a complex and dynamic behavior as a player exerts force in different directions. The primary movements of the shaft are deflection, droop, and torsion. We will address each of these important shaft movement parameters over the next three editions of the club times. Each of these shaft movements has a direct effect on the player’s ability to square the clubface at impact as well as their ability to strike the ball in the center of the clubface. These variables heavily influence the speed and direction of a golf shot. Of course, there are an enormous number of individual golfers who each display unique characteristics during their golf swings. Consequently, there are also a wide variety of shafts on the market today that are designed to match certain swing characteristics and build clubs to optimize individual player performance. A player who undergoes a professional club fitting with an expert club fitter can identify a shaft that best matches their unique swing, dramatically improving their chance of playing their best. To illustrate this point, let’s examine the idea of shaft deflection and how it impacts a golf shot.

Before we get into it, we should briefly discuss the general movement of the shaft in the swing. As the golf club initially moves away from the ball it is moving slowly, but it gathers speed as it moves to the top of the swing. Then, as the player transitions the club from the backswing into the down swing, there is a bending of the golf shaft as forces are exerted by the player. As the club starts to move down towards the ball, the player is attempting to

accelerate the club as fast as possible into the impact area. During each of these phases of the swing the shaft of the club is bending in one direction or another. This bending can occur in the lead/lag or toe up/toe down directions, in addition to a twisting of the shaft that is occurring as club speed is increased.

GOLF

When the shaft bends in a lead/lag direction it is known as “shaft deflection”. Shaft deflection causes the club head to lag behind the centerline of the shaft, which transforms kinetic energy into potential energy. Believe it or not, shaft deflection can exceed 3 inches in a stiff shaft during the downswing. Just before impact, there is a part of the swing known as the “release”. The release happens as the club head approaches the ball and the club head goes from lagging behind the center line of the shaft to actually leading the centerline of the shaft just before impact.

This part of the swing is known as the release because it literally releases the potential energy from the shaft into the ball. The amount of flexing that occurs in the shaft (based on its stiffness) will affect the dynamic loft angle of the club at impact as well as the initial ball speed. Dynamic loft directly affects the launch angle of the ball. Both the kinetic energy that is created by the player’s ability to generate club head speed during the downswing, and the potential energy from the shaft deflection are imparted to the golf ball during impact.

Shaft deflection is only one small part of why it is so important to work with an experienced club fitter to identify the correct shaft flex to play. Equipment manufacturers have invested significant resources into developing a variety of golf shafts each designed to match different golfer’s individual release patterns. Getting a shaft that is not properly fitted for your swing can make a difficult game even more difficult and prevent you from playing your best. In next month’s edition we will discuss shaft droop and how it affects the direction of a golf shot.

JULY 28TH JULY 25TH Sunday Couples Event

In 2023, Atlanta Athletic Club will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The club was founded in 1898 by a group of 65 Atlanta businessmen who enjoyed playing sports and camaraderie. This article is the third in a series entitled “125 Years: The Legacy of Atlanta Athletic Club.” The purpose of the series is so that members may become familiar with the history and heritage of the great club they belong to. THE GOLDEN AGE OF SPORTS An excerpt from “A Host to History: The Story of Atlanta Athletic Club”

With the opening of the Carnegie Way facility, the AAC ushered in the club’s “Golden Age of Sports.” Many of the sports that became popular at the AAC in this period were organized in the latter part of the nineteenth century. By the turn of the century, the AAC had formed teams in a variety of sports that were competing not only with club teams from other cities, but with Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia, and other colleges. There were teams for basketball, swimming, baseball, track, handball, and cross-country, led first by the club’s athletic director, Dr. Theodore “Ted” Toepel, who was hired in 1905.

John Heisman

Each of the AAC’s athletic directors has left a different legacy, and Toepel focused most of his energies on developing an indoor track team. On April 7, 1908, John Heisman, Georgia Tech’s full-time football coach for whom the Heisman Trophy was named, was hired part-time as athletic director and basketball coach at a salary of seventy-five dollars per month. Heisman’s contract with the AAC, which is on display in the club’s Heisman Room, specified his duties: “Under this agreement and during its continuance it shall be the duty of the party of the second part to organize, take

1908 Basketball Team

charge of, direct and coach outdoor baseball team or teams; indoor baseball team or teams; football team or teams; basketball team or teams and track team or teams and such other athletic team or teams of the Atlanta Athletic Club as may be required by the board of directors of such club . . . devoting the same time, attention and degree of care as is usually and customarily exercised by coaches of colleges or university teams of the same character.” Heisman was eventually followed by Joe Bean.

In 1911, the AAC elected an athletic committee, for which member Al A. Doonan served as chairman. Under his direction and with Bean’s assistance, the AAC produced some of the finest amateur athletes in the South. In his book, East Lake Country Club History, Charlie Elliott explained, “Joe was also the power behind those years when AAC teams, competing with other athletic clubs and top-ranking college teams, won championship after championship and established the AAC in the highest echelon of sports.” Bean was born on March 18, 1874, and became an accomplished baseball player. At the age

1913-1914 Basketball Team with Coach Joe Bean

of twenty and weighing only 113 pounds, he turned professional and played shortstop in the minor leagues. From 1902 to 1903 he played with the New York Giants, then moved to New Jersey where he played until 1909, after which time he managed the ball club. He came to the AAC as athletic director in 1911 and, with the exception of a five-year hiatus between 1938 and 1942, stayed for nearly half a century. “Joe [Bean] was also the power behind those years when AAC teams, competing with other athletic clubs and top-ranking college teams, won championship after championship and established the AAC in the highest echelon of sports.” Charlie Elliott Fred Lanoue, from Springfield College in Massachusetts, where basketball was invented, replaced Bean during the brief hiatus, and he was followed by Ed Shea, who was at the AAC for a year until Bean returned to the club. Under Bean, the physical fitness classes were well attended by notable Atlantans, including former governor John M. Slaton. In the fall of 1949, John T. Foster replaced Bean and was followed by Phil Cady, then Charles Cooper in the fall of 1952. Cooper remained at the AAC until the summer of 1962, when he left to work for a similar country club in South Carolina. He helped build the swimming program and was succeeded by his friend, Buz McGriff, who remained at the AAC for more than thirty years. McGriff was followed by Chip Smith, Darin Armour, Jeff Chandley, and Neil Doldo, who serves as the current athletic director.

FITNESS & AQUATICS On the Road to Tokyo Bailey Moody heads to the 2021 Paralympic Games Congratulations to Bailey Moody for her selection to the U.S. Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball

Team. After a long wait through the pandemic postponement, she will finally compete in the Paralympic Games in Tokyo this summer as Team USA defends their Rio 2016 gold medal. Bailey is one of the youngest players on the 12-woman roster. Always an athlete, Bailey had her leg amputated at the age of ten during a year-long battle with a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma. Shortly after beating cancer, she discovered adaptive sports including wheelchair basketball. Bailey’s first international competition was the 2018 World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. She won a gold medal at the 2019 U25 World Championships in Thailand and a silver medal at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Atlanta Athletic Club’s Fitness Director, Neil Doldo, has trained Bailey for the last few years and should be congratulated for his efforts. “Over the last three years, I have watched Bailey transform into the elite athlete she is today,” Doldo says. “I have never seen someone so determined to perfect her craft. I am certain that no matter what sport she chose, she would be at the level she is today. Not only does she excel on the court, but she is an inspiration to me and all others around her. Adversity is not a word she knows, and everything she does, she does with a smile on her face, no matter how difficult.” Bailey just finished her freshman year at the University of Alabama where she is a member of the 2021 National Championship Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team. Bailey is the daughter of club members, Tiffany and Patrick Moody, the niece of Tyler and Candace Smith, and the granddaughter of David and Cindy Smith. The 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo will take place August 24 through September 5.

Tennis Updates From Director of Tennis, Jeff Chandley

Welcome Dominic Arbie to the Professional Staff Many of you may have already met our newest professional, Dominic Arbie. Dominic comes to us from the Concourse Club where he was the junior director. Dominic will be using his communica- tion skills along with his teaching skills in helping us continue to build our junior tennis program. Welcome Dominic to the club. If you have a junior that is interested in tennis, let Dominic work his magic on the courts. Upcoming Events LTA Member/Guest AUGUST 19 AND 20 This is by far our most popular event. Every year we have more members wanting to participate than slots available. We have two days reserved for this event so we will be able to accommodate various number

of participants. There has been communication from members on the best way to host this event. Keeping it as a 2 day event or determining how to accommodate all in a 1 day event. Since this is for you, our members, we wanted your input. We sent a survey (deadline July 5) to all LTA members for feedback. The questions: 1) Keep as a two day event and players never sit out (accommodates 64 players each day, no wait list; 2) A one day event with players sitting out one round (accommodates 94 players, 34 on wait list); or 3) one day event, each player sits out one round (accommodates 128 players, no wait list and more social time) Once the member votes have been tallied, we will share with you the results. We strongly suggest you register for the event as quickly as you can. Registration will open July 15 online at 8 a.m. Only online reservations will be allowed! Cost is $225 per team.
