A SPECIAL 125TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
A Year of Celebration & Making History A Letter From the 125th Anniversary Committee
Bobby Jones said, “what’s important is our friends and friendships.” October will also bring more celebration events. Many of you heard about the super successful June foursomes match with East Lake, our original country club facility. The follow-up match will be October 13 at our Atlanta Athletic Club. A shout out to Tim Commons for a great job organizing this fun day of competition using the popular and unique foursomes style play. Due to the renovation project of the golf course at East Lake, we will be hosting the Annual East Lake Cup on October 29 through November 1. This competition brings together the collegiate men’s and women’s four finalist teams from the NCAA Golf Championships held this past June at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. Included in the field will be the men’s teams from Georgia Tech, Florida, North Carolina (including our own David Ford), and Florida State. The women’s teams will be Wake Forest, Southern California, Stanford, and Texas A&M. Plan to attend and support these outstanding student athletes. The competition will be covered by The Golf Channel which is another opportunity to showcase our Club and the 125th! Quasquicentennial, the word meaning “125 anniversary” was coined from an engineer to describe a celebration of such an anniversary. Our Atlanta Athletic Club has reached this level in our history. Interestingly, the number 125 has a meaning, it’s about “hope, encouragement
and positivity.” This phrase is particularly relevant as we all review our history through the excellent communications from our team members and members which we have received throughout the year. We hope these historical pieces have encouraged you to seek additional information by walking through our clubhouse to notice and read our extensive memorabilia. As we enter the autumn season there are several celebration events in which you will want to participate. The actual date of our 125th anniversary is September 5, 2023. Since this date falls at the Labor Day Holiday, scheduling necessitates we use September 4 as an event day. Look out for information about golf, tennis, athletics and other opportunities. The Friday, September 8 Gala Celebration will be a Black Tie Affair starting at 5:30pm. This is an all inclusive event with some surprises for your entertainment pleasure. It will be a memorable evening and a chance to share your own club memories with your fellow members. As

Keeping Our Heritage Alive: Meeting the Alexa Stirling Family A Visit to Royal Ottawa Golf Club
From Kate Brunette: Hello Ted,
On June 21, a small contingent of Heritage Committee members including Past President Bruce Barfield and current President Kevin Costello traveled to Ottawa, Canada to meet the descendants of Alexa Stirling Fraser and members of Royal Ottawa Golf Club and to build stronger ties between the Atlanta Athletic Club, East Lake Golf Club and Royal Ottawa Golf Club. Royal Ottawa Golf Club was the home club of Alexa Stirling after she married Dr. Wilbert Fraser and settled in Ottawa to raise her three children: Sandra, Glen and Richard. Last year, Ted Sullivan and members of the Heritage Committee submitted the nomination of Alexa Stirling Fraser to the World Golf Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, Alexa was not included on the ballot this year due to the backlog of candidates from the founding members of the LPGA as well as other highly qualified candidates. In our efforts to get Alexa Stirling nominated into the World Golf Hall of Fame, we have worked closely with the Stirling-Fraser family, Royal Ottawa Golf Club and East Lake Golf Club. Ted Sullivan of the Heritage Committee arranged the trip with Kate Brunette, wife of Ian Carwardine, who is one of the grandsons of Alexa Stirling Fraser. A few members of Heritage Committee traveled to Royal Ottawa at the request of the Stirling family to enjoy a day of golf, fellowship and shared history. After a beautiful day of golf on the main course at Royal Ottawa, Jennifer Mirsky provided a tour of their historic club and shared some interesting parallels between Royal Ottawa and Atlanta Athletic Club’s East Lake Country Club. Both courses were designed by
golf course architect Tom Bendelow. Both courses employed George Sargent as their golf professional. Both clubs moved locations several times and both clubs had clubhouses that burned down twice! But of course the most significant parallel that we share is the incomparable Alexa Stirling, who was an honorary member of both clubs. Alexa was the first national champion of Atlanta Athletic Club, winning the 1916 US Women’s Amateur Championship (and repeating in 1919 and 1920) and she was also Royal Ottawa’s first female national champion, winning the Canadian Open in 1934 (she had won it previously in 1920, before she married Dr. Fraser). In reverence to the late Alexa Stirling Fraser, both clubs have a lounge named in her honor. It was a wonderful trip and great occasion to strengthen the common bonds we share in our mission to have Alexa inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame so she can be recognized as the true champion and great sportswoman she was!
On behalf of Alexa's family, I/we want to express our gratitude for the wonderful time we had last week. Our Ottawa based family had the pleasure of meeting you, Bruce, Kevin, Margaret, and Cherise, as we gathered to honour our Alexa at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club. It truly was a special occasion. It was fascinating to discover the remarkable parallels between the two clubs. From multiple locations to clubhouse fires, and even sharing George Sargent as the head golf professional, and, of course, Alexa. Both histories are intertwined in unexpected ways. Moreover, we wanted to extend our sincerest appreciation for the thoughtful gift you bestowed upon Alexa's descendants who were present—Ian, Doug, Brian, and Chris. They will remember this gift as a meaningful reminder of our time together. Additionally, the AAC 125th anniversary pins you kindly provided to each dinner guest are lovely, thank you. They not only commemorated a significant milestone for your club but also serve as mementos of a memorable gathering. We were honoured to receive them. Once again, thank you Ted. We are immensely thankful to you & your heritage committee for making this trip to Ottawa. It is through your collective efforts that Alexa’s remarkable legacy continues to be celebrated and honoured. We are deeply grateful for your support and dedication on this journey to get Alexa inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. We look forward to continuing to build on our connection to The Atlanta Athletic Club, East Lake Golf Club and The Royal Ottawa Golf Club. Alexa would be so very happy we gathered.

Meanwhile... Many important historical moments happened across the country & the rest of the world during this period.
Ronald Reagan was elected 40th President of the United States in 1980 and served from 1981 to 1989. His term saw a restoration of prosperity at home with a goal of achieving “peace through strength” abroad. His economic policies became known as Reaganomics and emphasized reducing reliance on government, cutting taxes and government spending. His tough stance on the Soviet Union brought about the end of the Cold War.
1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre – Chinese troops kill nearly 1000 protestors who are demonstrating for democracy Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and US President George H.W. Bush declare the Cold War over and the fall of the Berlin Wall occurs on November 9. In 1990 wrecking cranes begin tearing down the Berlin Wall at the Brandenburg Gate, reuniting East and West Germany. 1990 Nelson Mandela is released after 27 years imprisonment in South Africa 1991 Operation Desert Storm begins, with US-led coalition forces bombing Iraq, during the Gulf War Tim Berners-Lee releases files describing his ideas for the World Wide Web and WWW debuts as a publicly available service on the Internet 1994 Nelson Mandela sworn in as South Africa’s first black president 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, dies in a car crash in a road tunnel in Paris
1981 Sandra Day O’Conner is sworn in as the first woman to serve on US Supreme Court
Prince Charles marries Lady Diana Spencer First year the word “Internet” is mentioned 1985 Michael Jordan named NBA “Rookie of the Year”
1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explodes on January 28, 73 seconds into flight killing all on board including teacher Christa McAuliffe 1987 October 19th –stock market crashes and becomes known as “Black Monday” Reagan delivers his Berlin Wall Speech “Tear Down this Wall” 1988 Margaret Thatcher becomes the longest-serving British Prime Minister this century
The Soviet Collapse 1991 marked the Soviet Collapse, the internal disintegration within the USSR which ended the existence of the country and federal government as a sovereign state. Fifteen republics gained full independence on December 26, 1991. The Soviet Union had experienced internal stagnation and ethnic separatism. By late 1991, amid a catastrophic political crisis, with several republics already departing the Union and the waning of centralized power, the leaders declared that the Soviet Union no longer existed. Gorbachev resigned in December 1991 and what was left of the Soviet parliament voted to end itself.
