The Grass is Greener in 2022 A Letter from the Golf Grounds Chairman
The Golf Course Maintenance team can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for our members as we finish up the year and prepare for our Riverside Renovation project in the year 2022!
First, we can’t express enough the pride and excitement we felt to see our Highlands course on display across several television networks during the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June. The labor of our team really shone brightly that week as well as in the weeks leading up to this unforgettable event. What a true team effort across the entire club lead by our members hitting off the mats ahead of the event and lending a hand at our divot filling parties. The players couldn’t say enough kind things about how much they appreciated our members sacrifice to have the course play like it did. Equal to the pride we have from the KPMG event, the team is very excited about the enhanced conditioning on the golf courses this Summer. While Mother Nature has helped us some and will always be our biggest hurdle, we have really put a focus on the day-to-day member experience this year and the results are there. The team has had so much fun taking the conditioning of the courses in all areas to the next level. From the increased double cutting and rolling of the greens, to the increased frequency of fairway mowing, hand raking bunkers and of course our detail team we now have. The detail team has really made a big impact. Daily they are focused on many things like edging sprinklers, edging cart paths, filling divots, picking up broken tees, picking up debris/pine cones, keeping all beds with fresh pine straw, trimming trees and other plant material just to name a few things. This didn’t come without cost, as the Board of Directors approved an increase to headcount and required materials to allow us to do this work. THE RIVERSIDE RENOVATION It’s hard to believe we are only 18 weeks away from starting the Riverside Renovation on January 3, 2022! The planning continues to progress well in all areas. We are on track to receive our required permits by Thanksgiving. As well, we have been able to manage our project budget well with the early purchase of pipe and other materials, beating the large price increases that have happened recently. Please make sure to check out the most recent Riverside Renovation update video and accompanying FAQ’S. Before you know it, October 1, 2022 will be here with the welcome sight of members teeing it up on the new Riverside Course! If you have any questions regarding the renovation project you can send an e-mail to riversidereno@aac1.org and someone from our team will connect with you. John Stakel Golf Grounds Committee Chair

THE GOLF PROFESSIONALS of the Atlanta Athletic Club In 2023, Atlanta Athletic Club will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The club was founded in 1898 by a group of 65 Atlanta businessmen who enjoyed playing sports and camaraderie. This article is the fifth in a series entitled “125 Years: The Legacy of Atlanta Athletic Club.” The purpose of the series is so that members may become familiar with the history and heritage of the great club to which they belong.
Stewart Maiden
The AAC’s golf professionals played a critical role in helping to mentor the club’s best players. The golf club’s first professional was Alex Smith, born in Carnoustie, Scotland, in 1872. He immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1898 with five brothers and took his first job as greenkeeper at Washington Park in Chicago. Smith, a runner-up in the U.S. Open in 1898 and 1901 and champion in 1906 and 1910, was offered a position at East Lake after winning the 1906 U.S. Open and remained for about a year. On March 1, 1907, James Maiden, Smith’s brother-in-law and known to the members as “Jimmy,” replaced Smith, at a salary of sixty dollars per month. Maiden’s duties were spelled out in his contract and restricted him from charging more than a dollar for a forty-five-minute lesson and two dollars for playing eighteen holes with a member. In 1908, Maiden left to become head professional at Nassau Country Club on Long Island, where he remained until 1948. East Lake replaced him with his brother, Stewart, known as “Kiltie.” He is best remembered for giving a young Bobby Jones his first set of clubs (a driver, brassie, midiron, mashie, niblick, and putter) and being the person after whom Jones modeled his golf swing. In his 1927 autobiography Down the Fairway, Jones wrote that the arrival of Stewart Maiden at the AAC was “the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me in golf, which is saying a lot, because my entire career, if it may be called a career, has been lucky.”
Over the past century, the AAC has produced some of the sport’s best amateur golfers in the nation, including Alexa Stirling, Perry Adair, Margaret Maddox, Watts Gunn, Charlie Yates, Charlie Harrison, Dot Kirby, Tommy Barnes Sr. and Jr., Gladys and Joyce Denson, Martha Kirouac, DeWitt Weaver, Neal Hendee, Justin Bolli, Courtney Swaim Trimble, Scott Dunlap, and Bailey Tardy, all of whom enjoyed or are enjoying distinguished careers. Their accomplishments have kept the AAC in the national spotlight for nearly a century. Many competed in state or regional events, making a name for themselves and the club throughout the South. But none was better known than Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones Jr. Born on St. Patrick’s Day in 1902, Jones was a lifelong member of the AAC, having played his first and last rounds at the club’s East Lake course. Jones explains how he was introduced to golf in Down the Fairway, “Golf began for all of us— Mother and Dad and me—in the early summer of 1907, when we moved out of the city to board with Mrs. Frank Meador in a big house about a mashie pitch from what was then the second fairway of the East Lake golf course of the Atlanta Athletic Club, five miles from town.” Jones’s parents had taken lessons from Jimmy Maiden and played regularly at East Lake. Fulton Colville, one of the other boarders at Mrs. Meador’s house, gave Jones his first club, a cleek (an iron with a long, shallow blade that compares to today’s 3-iron or 4-wood) cut down to size by club
professional Jimmy Maiden. Because Jones was too young to play on the actual course, he and Frank Meador built their own two-hole course alongside the East Lake property and played it all summer.
Jones learned the game by watching Stewart Maiden on the course. In his autobiography he explained: “Stewart never gave me a lesson in golf, though he has spent many hours, most of them profane, coaching me when I was in a slump with one club or another. I picked up my game watching him play, unconsciously as a monkey, and as imitatively.” During their second summer at East Lake, the Jones family rented a building, fondly known as the mule house, on the AAC’s property, which had been renovated as a summer home. Though Jones confessed to have liked baseball better than golf at the outset, he played in his first unofficial tournament, a six-hole match at East Lake. Alexa Stirling, who became Georgia’s first national amateur player, shot a lower score, but they gave Jones the three-inch cup that is still on display at the club.
The Mule House
The Sargent Fami ly The Sargent family served the AAC with distinction for fifty-three years. After Stewart Maiden left the AAC, a succession of golf professionals, including Willie Ogg, Frank Ball, Billy Wilson, and Charlie Gray followed, but none left the kind of indelible imprint that the Sargents did. George Sargent became the professional at East Lake in 1932. Born in Epsom Downs, England,
he learned to play golf early and immigrated to the United States as an established player and professional. He won the 1909 U.S. Open, setting a record for the lowest score, and did the same in the 1912 Canadian Open. His U.S. Open medal is on display at the entrance to the AAC’s golf shop, appropriately named in honor of the Sargent family. George served as president of the PGA of America from 1920 to 1926. While working at Chevy Chase Golf Club, he gave lessons to President Taft. From there, he moved to Interlachen and then Scioto. Two years after Bobby Jones won the Grand Slam, he came to East Lake and remained there until his retirement in 1947. Harold Sargent, an assistant at the club, followed his father as club professional at the AAC upon George’s retirement. Harold served the golfing community as president of the PGA of America from 1958 to 1960 and was instrumental in bringing the 15th Biennial Ryder Cup Matches to East Lake in 1963. He moved with the club when it elected to go north in the 1960s. In 1979, his brother, Jack, became the professional at the new facility and served until 1985, just as the AAC was building its reputation for the new courses as a championship venue. The Sargent’s legacy continues. Rick Anderson, the past director of golf, trained under the Sargents and was one of the first golf professionals in Georgia to earn the Master Professional designation. As a result of his efforts, his golf shop is listed regularly among the top 20 in the nation. Rick retired in March of 2021 and Bud Taylor is the current Director of Golf.

THE COMPLEX MOVEMENT OF A GOLF SHAFT DURING THE SWING, PART 3 By: John Breedlove, PGA Professional GOLF GOLF
In the last couple editions of the club times, we have been discussing the importance of choosing the right golf shafts for your game. Specifically, “Why” it’s important given the complex and dynamic movement that a golf shaft undergoes as forces are exerted upon it during a golf swing. The three primary shaft movements are deflection, droop, and torsion. In the previous edition we discussed shaft droop, which primarily influences the dynamic lie angle of the club, and thereby, the direction of the golf shot as it leaves the club face. In this edition, we will take a brief look at torsion, commonly referred to as “shaft torque”. First of all, what is shaft torque? Well, simply put, shaft torque is the shaft’s resistance to twisting. If you were to look at shaft manufacturer’s technical specifications you would find each shaft’s torque measured in degrees (usually ranging from as low as 2 degrees to as high as 7 degrees). The measured amount of torque indicates how many degrees the shaft will twist under a predetermined amount of force. These numbers may be helpful, but they don’t necessarily mean a whole lot because there really isn’t an industry standard method for measuring torque.
pointed more to the left (for a right handed golfer) and using a shaft with lower torque would result in a clubface pointed more to the right. The second reason why torque is important is that it is a major contributor to the “feel” of the shaft (much more than flex). Generally speaking, shafts with higher torque feel “smooth” or sometimes even “whippy” while shafts with lower torque often feel “boardy” or “stout”.
Conventional wisdom suggests that players who tend to hook the ball would benefit from a shaft with lower torque and players that slice the ball would benefit from a shaft with higher torque. Conventional wisdom also suggests that players who swing faster need a shaft with lower torque. In fact, this assumption is built right into the shafts from most manufacturers. For example, many shafts on the market have a lower torque in the X-flex version than in the stiff flex, while the stiff flex has a lower torque than the regular flex. Unfortunately, conventional wisdom isn’t necessarily accurate when you add the human element. As always in fitting golf equipment there are a number of other variables (like shaft flex and weight) that influence how a player performs with a given shaft. This is why it is important to test shafts with the help of an expert club fitter to make sure to choose the right shaft for your game.
Ok, why does it matter? It matters for two reasons. First of all, torque has a major impact on where the ball ends up. All things being equal, using a golf shaft with a higher torque would lead to a clubface that is

A Note From Our New Youth & Family Activities Director
Heads Up!
I am so excited to be joining you all at AAC! I am looking forward to growing and enhancing the programing for your kids! I have been working with children for over 20 years and I want to bring a lot of my background and experience to the programming here. I value your input because I want the programs to fit your needs! Please feel free to email me your thoughts and ideas. I am happy to hear them! Although we are not looking to make any drastic changes to programing right away, you will begin to see some changes. These changes are due in part to staffing shortages, but also in response to needs that have been voiced by members. I hope to meet you all soon. My office is up in the Timbers Loft. Feel free to stop by anytime! Stefanie Arrington
TIMBERS IS CLOSED ON SEPTEMBER 6 WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE CARDBOARRD BOAT REGATTA!

Timbers Drop-In Care vs Event/Camp We absolutely love having your children here with us! Please understand that! However, there are limits we must operate under by Georgia law to be able to continue running. Please be mindful of these limits because we could be audited by the state and we don’t want to lose our license to run Timbers and our other programming. • Children can only be here for a max of 4 hours per day and a total of 10 for the week. • These hours DO NOT include events or camps such as Fun Before 1 and Friday Flicks. • So for example your child can be here Tuesday for drop in for 4 hours, Wednesday for drop in for 4 hours, and Saturday for drop in for ONLY two more hours. They can ALSO be here in the same week for Friday Night Flicks. • There is a 10-minute grace period. After that, you will be charged time and a half. • During drop in care the parent must stay on premises. • During events/camps parents can leave the premises.
We are making some changes to the Timbers Drop- In Care that we hope will help make your lives easier! SUNDAY Drop-In Care closed, but there will be an event you can register for from 12:30-6:30pm. MONDAY Drop-In Care closed, but there will be an event you can register for from 8am to 11am or 12 to 3pm TUESDAY Drop-In Care from 8am to 3pm only. WEDNESDAY Drop-In Care from 8am to 3pm only. THURSDAY Drop-In Care from 8am to 3pm and an event in the evening from 6-9pm. FRIDAY Drop-In Care from 8am to 3pm and an event in the evening from 6-9pm. SATURDAY Drop-In Care closed, but there will be events you can register for from 9am-12 and from 6-9pm. ** We will make adjustments to this as needed. There will be will likely be exceptions, such as school holidays and special events.
