Club Times: May/June 2025

50 Year Member Tony Swann It is hard to capture a lifetime of memories in just a few paragraphs. The AAC/Swann journey began in the early sixties when my father (JP) and mother (Eleanor) joined the Club and has extended three generations. My earliest memories include swim lessons from Buzz McGriff at East Lake, being chased out of the men’s locker room in the downtown club after swimming in the indoor pool and Sunday fried chicken dinners at the Yacht Club. Family activities shifted north in the early seventies when the Club moved to unincorporated Fulton Couty in what was originally called Riverbend. I think somewhere in storage I have a pool towel, which I won’t be returning, that has the name Riverbend. Most of our family time was spent on the tennis courts where my parents, sister Eleanor, and I experienced various levels of success. It is always a heart tug when I pass by mother’s plaque on the wall with the other AAC Hall of Fame inductees. Also, my father, who passed away in 2020, is buried with his “AAC 50-Year” pin on his lapel. After graduating from UGA in the early eighties, I reconnected with the Club with a renewed interest in tennis and thoroughly enjoyed the Thursday night basketball league inclusive of jerseys (I have one that won’t be returned either), referees, an electronic scoreboard and player stats posted on the bulletin board of the health club. The nineties brough about change with a new passion for golf that burns to this day which embarrassingly (or proudly) includes 117 rounds of golf in 2024. I cherish all the friends I’ve made on the golf course, in the Interlachen and in the men’s grill (back room of course). All while battling maturity issues, which proudly persist to this day, I was able to introduce a third generation of Swann’s to the AAC. My wife Lara discovered a love for tennis and became heavily involved in the tennis community. I became known as Lara’s husband! My son Jamie and daughter Cameron enjoyed the summer camps, swimming and eating hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches. Although I don’t often agree with the decisions made by our Club’s leadership, the AAC remains a place of sanctuary and I’m truly blessed to drive through its gates. I’m well into the third quarter of my life but know there are many more AAC memories to be made. Thank you AAC.
