How is it that 50-years have passed so quickly and just how many times have I driven through the Bobby Jones Gate to enjoy all that the AAC offers! My first visit and fondest memory was in 1972 when the Club extended a kind introduction gesture of a complimentary round of golf and a tour of the rudiments of our clubhouse and athletic

Being a 50-year member of the Atlanta Athletic Club brings to mind so many good memories. I’ve played in a lot of golf tournaments and the Member-Guest

Tournaments over the years. I have been lucky enough to have had two holes in one on Riverside #6 in 1979 and in 2014. I am now playing in the Duffers Group. Both of our sons were involved in the Junior Golf Group and on the swim teams. In the summer, they would spend their days at the club swimming in the pool and playing golf. My wife Pat is a member of the Women’s 18-Hole Golf Association and has volunteered for the many Pro-Golf Tournaments we’ve had at the club. In addition to the nice facilities, the best part of being a member of the AAC is all the good friends we’ve met over the years and the wonderful memories.

center. That experience sealed it for me, I knew immediately I wanted to be a member and a member for life! It was that membership that opened the door for so many wonderful family meals central to the year-end holidays, Easter, pre-wedding parties, birthdays, and exciting career achievement celebrations. There are endearing friendships that will go the distance and include family names like Senkbeil, Palmieri, Stewarts (all 3-of them), Schertell, Gammage, Lebovitz, Humphries, Coughlin, Rowe, Leach, Hogan, Maloney, Nolley, and Wayne. I have so enjoyed my membership in the Duffers golfing group and that very special fraternity. I am a special member now pursuing my mountain hiking and snow sport adventures in the Colorado Rockies. I can’t wait to return to the Duffers full time. I treasure my AAC membership the many friendships and athletic benefits!

It is hard to believe that I have been an AAC member for 50 years. It seems like yesterday that I was arguing with Jim Britt about tee times. When I joined the Club, there were 27 holes of golf, a few tennis courts and a very small pool. Of course the clubhouse did not compare to what we have today. My regular group from that time are all gone, and I have been an out of town member for many years. COVID has kept me away the last couple of years, but I really enjoy the Club when I do get to come. I think AAC is by far the best Club in the Atlanta area, and I am proud to be a member.
