Club Times - May/June 2022
M A K I N G H I S T O R Y Happen I write this to you as my service on the board of the Club comes to a close. One of my last responsibilities has been to serve as the chair of the Heritage Committee and I have to say it has been one of the most fulfilling experiences I have had during my 10 years of service, something I never expected! We are so lucky to belong to a Club with such rich history, not just of golf but many other sports. As we celebrate our 125th anniversary we will have a great opportunity to share much of that history together. Even though the pandemic robbed the Heritage Committee of one year of activity, we established an aggressive list of goals for this past fiscal year. I’m pleased to report that we have made significant progress on each of them, many of which will have a positive impact on the club now and in the future. And I must give a special shout out to Margaret Almand and Ansley Brackin on the Atlanta Athletic Club staff for providing enormous support to our Heritage Committee this past year; thank you two! Here are the goals we established and a brief update as to the status of each:
1. Nominate Alexa Stirling to World Golf Hall of Fame 2. Organize and index all of our Club Times Articles 3. Create a strategic memorabilia list of items to be acquired by Atlanta Athletic Club 4. 125th Atlanta Athletic Club Anniversary planning 5. Digitize and memorialize our oral history into QR codes with narratives 6. Digitize Charlie Elliott’s 75th anniversary Atlanta Athletic Club History book
NOMINATE ALEXA STIRLING WORLD GOLF HALL OF FAME (WGHOF) Ted Sullivan led the sub-committee to get material ready for the WGHoF Nomination Committee. This effort had several committee members, many meetings, lots of research, organizing materials for reporting, and creating presentable reports for the WGHoF Nomination and the WGHoF Selection Committees. The final results of this sub- committee work can be found on the History page of our website. Once you read this, I’m sure you will be like everyone involved in this effort exclaiming: “why has she not been nominated before!” I assure you we will continue to fight for Alexa and right this wrong.
ORGANIZE AND INDEX OUR ALL OF THE CLUB TIMES ARTICLES The Club Times has always been the primary source of communication from the Club to the membership and as such is the source for most of the wonderful history of the Club. Until recently, all those back issues only existed in hard copy, located in cabinet drawers in our Archives Room -- and most members were likely unaware of their existence. The Heritage Committee realized that our history needs to be readily available to every member and tasked Bob Sharpenberg to lead a project over the past year to review all the previous Club Times issues and extract their historical content. This content has been further categorized into several chapters such as: Bobby Jones and articles written by his grandson, History Happens Here articles, Sports Appreciation Night, Hall of Fame, Other Notable Athletes, Major Championships, River Bend (our present location), East Lake and the Downtown Club. We are in the process of creating a ‘flipping book’, using technology which you are familiar with from our weekly Club Connection and which will be available for all to enjoy. Be on the lookout for an announcement in the not-too- distant future! CREATE A LIST OF STRATEGIC MEMORABILIA ITEMS TO BE ACQUIRED BY THE ATLANTA ATHLETIC CLUB Over the years there have been many historical items presented to the Club for purchase but there has never been a formal strategy to determine what items would be
