Atlanta Athletic Club Sees Bright Future in Women’s Golf A Letter from Our AAC KPMG Championship Co-Chairs

The AAC is very proud to host the 67th KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, our second women’s major championship, and the club’s sixth major golf championship overall! The Highlands Course, designed by renowned course architect Rees Jones, has been the host of five of golf ’s major championships, and it will again present an excellent challenge for the best female golfers in the world.

Steve Craine Women’s PGA Championship Co-Chair

Ashley Adelman Women’s PGA Championship Co-Chair

The Atlanta Athletic Club’s mission has always been to host national golf championships, while also being one of the top family focused clubs in the country. This championship joins a list of other prestigious tournaments held at the Atlanta Athletic Club including: the 1976 U.S. Open Championship, the 1990 U.S. Women’s Open, three PGA Championships (1981, 2001, 2011), the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur, and the 2014 U.S. Amateur. The AAC has a history of developing great golfers as well, including the great Bobby Jones and three other renowned female golfers, Alexa Stirling, Dot Kirby, and Martha Kirouac. The club continues to focus on building a very robust junior golf development program, which has recently produced many talented young players who have been ranked in the top 100 golfers nationally. Several of these young men and women, from this program, have recently gone on to play golf for several Division I schools. In addition to being a stage for the greatest women golfers of our day, this Championship also provides the opportunity to “Inspire Greatness” and to empower women on and off the golf course. We can all be inspired to dream of and to achieve our very best whether we are athletes, business people, students, parents, community leaders, volunteers, or fans. Atlanta Athletic Club is extremely proud to host the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. We offer our sincere thanks to the many dedicated people who have worked to ensure this year’s Championship is a successful one. On behalf of the membership, staff and volunteers, we hope that you enjoy this major championship and that you take with you many special memories of a wonderful week of golf !

Sincerely,

Ashley Adelman

The February 1990 issue of Club Times reported, “In less than six months, the grounds and courses will be alive with the activity of the most prestigious women’s golf tournament played. Before this can happen, though, an enormous amount of planning and preparation must occur. In this area, you as members can provide a great deal of help. With enthusiasm and support, we can produce the best U.S. Women’s Open ever.” The article’s intent was to encourage members to help with program advertising and ticket sales, but was mainly to recruit the twelve hundred volunteers needed to help run the event. Betsy King

From July 9 to July 15, the top amateur and professional women golfers, who had qualified regionally, came to Atlanta to participate in the championship. The winner was to receive a gold medal and a significant share of the half-million- dollar purse. That week, the AAC played host to Nancy Lopez, Jan Stephenson, Amy Alcott, Georgia’s Hollis Stacy, Laura Davies, Ayako Okamoto, and Liselotte Neumann. The 1990 U.S. Women’s Open Championship was played over the AAC’s Riverside course, formed from the two Robert Trent Jones nines that bordered the Chattahoochee River. For the second year in a row, Betsy King won with a remarkable 4-under-par. Her seventy-two- hole total of 284 defeated Patty Sheehan by one stroke. Sheehan had led for two rounds with a 66 and 68, but dropped eight shots with twenty- three holes to play. She finished with rounds of 75 and 76 for a total of 285. King was nine shots behind Sheehan after thirty-six holes and eleven behind with thirty-three holes to play. But her final rounds of 71 and 70 made her the fifth player ever to win back-to-back U.S. Opens. A rain delay required a thirty-six-hole final, and she captured the $85,000 purse. The executive committee of the tournament agreed to donate a portion of the proceeds to the March of Dimes to assist in its fight against birth defects.

Past president Don Sands served as chairman of the event, and Martha Kirouac as co-chair. During the planning, the members convinced Kirouac to play in the Southern Women’s Open at

the Polo Fields in Cumming, and though she had not played competitively for over twelve years, she promptly won it. The reigning U.S. Women’s Open Champion was thirty-four-year-old Betsy King, who in 1989 broke many LPGA all-time records and won $654,132 in a single season. She was named Golf World’s Player of the Year. At the press preview at the AAC, she admitted that her putting had not been strong that year, but reserved most of her concern for the AAC’s Bermuda rough. When asked about the heat in July, she replied, “Many previous tour stops have been in the South. Most players should be ready for the heat.” She was excited about the layout of the Riverside course, explaining, “Open courses are so good that you don’t see many fluke winners.” When asked to speculate about who might contend in the event, she cited Beth Daniel, Nancy Lopez, and, of course, herself.

Don’t Overlook or Undervalue These Critical Tools By: John Breedlove, PGA Professional GOLF

It is common knowledge that PGA tour players are incredible ball strikers, but did you know that even the world’s best players only hit about 13 out of 18 greens in regulation? If the very best players in the world are only able to hit about 65% of greens in regulation, where does that leave the average club player? Well, research data provided by The Grint indicates that a scratch player hits about 57% of greens, 11-15 handicaps average somewhere around 28%, and 25+ handicaps only manage to hit about 12%.

When you think about the game like this, it becomes clear that one of the easiest ways for a higher handicap to lower their golf score is to avoid disaster when they inevitably miss greens with their approach shots. If the average player can simply pitch the ball on the green on their first attempt and take no more than two putts, they can lower their scores dramatically. Just as Raymond Floyd pointed out in his book The Elements of Scoring, the best way to lower your golf score is to avoid shooting high scores. Another interesting take away from these statistics is that there is very little difference between the percentage of greens hit by an average tour pro (65%) and an average scratch player (57%), but there is a enormous difference in the scores they shoot. Part of this can be explained by the difficulty of the course setup for tour events, but perhaps more importantly, it demonstrates the tour pro’s deft touch with a wedge in their hands. Naturally, tour players have spent countless hours honing their technique and skills, but undoubtedly, they also have taken the time to put the proper tools in their bag that allow them to execute challenging shots around the greens. They understand that wedge play is a critical determinant for tournament success, and thus, the significance of selecting the right wedges. Unfortunately, for many amateur players, the wedges in their bag are little more than an afterthought. It is not unusual to see club player’s bags with the most recent driver on the market but wedges from 1990. This is completely backwards!! In fact, statistical data suggest that the value of a short shot is approximately 1.5 times the value of a long shot. How then can so many avid players have a $500 dollar driver, but not invest in wedges that match their game? Consider also that club players hit significantly fewer greens per round, and consequently, are faced with many more chips and pitches per round than the pros. Simply put, if you don’t have the right wedges in your bag, you are making an already difficult game more difficult and impeding your ability to shoot your lowest scores. CHOOSING THE RIGHT TOOLS If you are a serious about the game, it is imperative that you take the time to get fit for wedges that properly match your swing type and skill level. Some key considerations for any golf club, including wedges, are length, loft, lie, shaft, and grip size. Each of these technical specifications can impact your ability to hit the shots that you want around the green. However, there is one wedge specification that is often completely overlooked by average golfers: Wedge Bounce. Bounce is the section of the club that is interacting with the turf (or sand) as

GOLF

the club makes contact with the ball. It has a dramatic effect on the player’s ability to make solid contact with the ball on a variety of shots, and as Titleist master wedge maker Bob Vokey puts it “bounce is your friend”. WEDGE BOUNCE EXPLAINED Wedge bounce is the angle that is created between the leading edge and the lowest part of the

trailing edge or sole of the club. Essentially, the higher the bounce number, the higher the leading edge is off the ground. General recommendations for choosing the right wedge bounce for your game:

LOW BOUNCE A wedge is considered low bounce when it has between 4-6 degrees of bounce. These wedges are ideal for firm playing conditions and/or players that have a shallow angle of attack or a “sweeper” swing style. Players with a shallow attack angle typically pick the ball cleanly off the turf and leave very small (if any) divot. Having low bounce wedges allows these players to be precise with a variety of shots around the greens. MID BOUNCE

Mid Bounce wedges typically have between 7-10 degrees of bounce. These wedges are the most versatile of all bounce options and are a reasonably good fit for a majority of players on firm to normal course conditions. These wedges are best suited for players with a moderate angle of attack and a neutral swing style. HIGH BOUNCE High bounce wedges have more than 10 degrees of bounce. These wedges are designed to prevent the leading edge from digging into the turf or sand, so if you have a tendency to chunk pitches and chips, you might consider testing a wedge with a little more bounce. High bounce wedges are ideal for soft or wet turf conditions and soft, fluffy sand. Players who have a digger swing style and a steep angle of attack would often benefit from high bounce wedges.

In summary, saving shots around the green is the secret to lowering your golf score. This is true for players of all playing abilities. In fact, higher handicap players could potentially benefit even more than scratch golfers because they hit fewer greens in regulation in a given round. Therefore, choosing wedges that properly match your swing is critical for golfing success and should not be overlooked or undervalued. Getting fit for wedges can make the game more fun and improves your chances of playing your best!

In 2023, Atlanta Athletic Club will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The club was founded in 1898 by a group of 65 Atlanta businessmen who enjoyed playing sports and camaraderie. This article is the second in a series entitled “125 Years: The Legacy of Atlanta Athletic Club.” The purpose of the series is so that members may become familiar with the history and heritage of the great club they belong to. Building a Club in the Age of the Amateur Athelete

Determining the location of the Atlanta Athletic Club’s first facility was an easy decision, as most of the members worked downtown and desired a club within walking distance of their offices. Joel Hurt, one of the club’s charter members, opened the first clubhouse at 56 Edgewood Avenue, a street away from Five Points in the heart of the city, in April 1899. He leased it to the new club for five years, and the board immediately purchased $1,600 worth of new athletic equipment. The renovated building, which included

a gymnasium, lounge, administrative offices, locker rooms, and showers, was remembered as relatively spartan by today’s standards. During this period, the Industrial Aid Association (Life Insurance Company of Georgia), the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Atlanta Steel Hoop Company (Atlantic Steel), and Georgia Electric Light Company (Georgia Power) were founded, and many of the executives of these companies joined the AAC. By 1901, membership reached seven hundred. To accommodate the members’ growing interest in tennis, two courts were constructed on a vacant lot next to the Edgewood building. The club’s expanding membership quickly outgrew the first building, and the officers began to search for a new site. Unable to find a suitable existing structure, they elected to build a new facility. In 1901 the club purchased a vacant lot on Auburn Avenue, with the support of Asa G. Candler, who made a generous donation to the club. Burton Smith and the officers of the club hired architects Bleckley and Tyler to design the new building and opened it on November 27, 1902, at 37–39 Auburn Avenue, a site it would occupy for nearly a quarter of a century. “The second building, much larger than the first, included four tennis courts, a swimming pool, basketball and handball courts, an indoor track, pool tables, a locker room, and shower facilities,” explained former AAC president and club historian Bill O’Callaghan. “It reflected the growth in the numbers of members and the activities of members.” One of the most notable features was the addition of sectional double bowling alleys. But the installation of a telephone The Carnegie Building

Atlanta Athletic Club

drew the most attention. Invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell, the telephone was introduced to the AAC before many private homes in Atlanta had them. On December 4, 1902, Southern Bell installed a “special line metallic circuit” telephone station for a charge of five dollars per month. A year later, a second line was added; that same year, Western Union installed a telegraph line. By 1919, the membership had once again exceeded the club’s facilities, and the executive committee purchased from the Atlanta Theater Company property bounded by Carnegie Way, Cone Street, and Williams Street (then James Street). In 1924, the AAC purchased the Lyric Theater building for $275,000, remodeled it, and added a façade to the front. The ten-story building measured 140,000 square feet and included athletic facilities, exercise rooms, and forty-five guest rooms. The members loved the downtown club for its convenience and its modern facilities. It had the largest dining room of any country club in America, boasting a $20,000 kitchen. The main dining room featured chandeliers that were imported from Czechoslovakia by the Capitol Electric Company. In 1927, the AAC hosted twelve hundred diners, the largest seated indoor dinner given in Atlanta at that time, for a convention of Coca-Cola bottlers.

The staff in the grill have been great to assist our group with reservations to accommodate our diners. If you are interested in joining our bridge association please contact M.J. Olsen at mjolsen225@gmail.com or by phone: 770-595-8197. We are always looking for new players. 1st Sharon Perry / Decie Nygaard 2nd Danny Martin / Carole Fisher 3rd Liz Troy / Beachie Hall

Book Club is the third Thursday of each month (Sept.-May) 4:00 in the Stirling Room. Our opening meeting will have a guest author. Kelsey Payne (Director of Catering AAC) sister is an author, and we will be reading one of her books, Still Waters by Lindsay Brackett. The story takes place in Edisto, SC and we will have the opportunity to ask Lindsey (and Kelsey) what is fact and what is fiction. Copies of the book are available in the Stirling Room under the TV along with a copy of each of the books we will be reading. Please remember

to sign out the books and return them in a reasonable amount of time. These books can be found in the Ladies’ Locker Room.

FITNESS & AQUATICS POOL RULES: UPDATES FOR 2021 There have been several updates to pool rules that will go into effect this summer. To view all aquatic center rules, please click the link below: https://atlantaathleticclub.org/Member-Central/Club_Rules

Rules Update for 2021: Here is a quick guide to updates to rules:

• There will no longer be an age limit for children to enter either pool. The rule now states that any child that is wearing a diaper may not enter the main pool. There will be up to a $2,000.00 fine for any accident that results in a pool closure. • The lightning policy has changed slightly to be more clear: In the event of lightning or thunder, the pool shall be immediately cleared and not reopened until authorized by the Aquatic staff. • Aquatic staff will clear the pool at the first sound of thunder and/or sounding of the siren for 30 minutes. Each occurrence, thereafter, will restart the 30 minutes. • Upon the sight of lightning, the pool deck will be cleared immediately of all staff and members. Members and staff may not return to the pool deck until the siren signals “All Clear.” If thunder is heard prior to or following the “All Clear” signal, the Aquatic staff will observe the 30-minute time period for each thunder that is heard.

Additional Unchanged Important Pool Rules: • Only Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices will be allowed in the pool. NO inflatable floating devices will be permitted. Anything that requires air will not be permitted. • Swim diapers must be reusable, not disposable. • Food must be consumed at least 5 feet away from the pools. • Members’ grandchildren age 13 years and under will be permitted to use the Aquatic Center at no charge if accompanied by the member. Guest fees will apply to members bringing grandchildren age 14 and over. • Swimming attire must be in keeping with the family concept of this Club. Female bathing suit bottoms must be full coverage; no thongs or cheeky bottoms are allowed.
