I’m thrilled with the addition of our new Club Manager, Audra Lucas. Audra is off to a fantastic start and she is working diligently to raise the bar in the Clubhouse with service standards, menu selections, consistency and the overall experience in the Clubhouse. The theme this year for the new food and beverage leadership team at the AAC is “Be the Change You Want to See”. Audra has started building her team and making some important changes by restructuring her leaders in Food and Beverage to include a number of positions that allow for internal growth. Our new positions include a Director of Member Dining, Food and Beverage Supervisor, and Assistant Banquet Manager.
where he and his wife resided for the past 2 years. Kyle’s experience in private clubs and the restaurant industry is the perfect blend to add to Audra’s team. When I interviewed Kyle, I sensed a drive and passion for success and service that not only motivated me, but fit the culture we are continuing to build at AAC. I can’t wait for you to meet him and I’m sure you will feel his amazing energy. Welcome Kyle! To continue our theme of “change”, we are approaching the summer’s biggest event of the season, our 4th of July celebration, and have chosen to schedule this event for Friday, July 1st. We will kick off the long holiday weekend with our traditional patriotic celebration to include amazing games, fantastic food and unparalleled entertainment on Friday, including our annual fireworks show. The club will remain open through the holiday and will come to a close with our annual pool festivities all day on July 4th, complete with buffet, a DJ and plenty of patriotic fun. As an additional note, we will have full access to our golf course on July 4th. Normally, we have to close the course early to accommodate for the activities, but this will not be the case this year. I look forward to seeing you and your family at the Club during this epic weekend of celebration and family fun! Sincerely, Jason Huggins Chair of House and Vice Chair of Athletics
Audra’s newest addition to the leadership team comes to us with a vast private club background that includes Fiddler’s Elbow and Boca West Country Clubs. Kyle Hillhouse now leads our Food and Beverage team as the club’s Director of Food and Beverage. Originally from Durban, South Africa, Kyle
came to the United States in 2014 to pursue his passion in the Hospitality industry while working at the #1 ranked Platinum residential club in America, Boca West Country Club. He spent 4 seasons at Boca West and was offered a permanent position at Fiddler’s Elbow as their Banquet Manager. Kyle also held the General Manager position for a restaurant group in New Jersey

Post Your Score the Day You Play The prompt submission of acceptable scores from authorized formats of play is an important part of ensuring the integrity of your Handicap Index. When abnormal course or weather conditions cause scores to be unusually high or low on a given day, a “Playing Conditions Calculation” will adjust Score Differentials to better reflect a player’s actual performance. Pace of Play
g o l f
The pace of play at the Atlanta Athletic Club is a topic we take very seriously. In a round of golf, you find yourself hitting somewhere between 70-100 shots. Between pre-shot routines, proper golf etiquette, and having to find those pesky lost balls a round can take quite a while. The goal at AAC is for a round to take four hours when carts are off the path, and four hours and 15 minutes when carts are on the path. Some tips to improve the pace of play: • Halfway House – It is a time killer! Please use it quickly. If possible, please utilize the beverage carts for food and drink options. If you would like to order something that needs to be prepared, please order on #8 tee by calling (770) 368-7751. • Forget honors entirely; play ready golf at all times. • Determine your yardage before it is your turn to hit. The cart GPS yardages are now to the hole. • Try this guideline: From the time you pick up your coin, you have 15 seconds in which to hit a putt. • In the age of plastic spikes and smooth soles, practice continual putting. Once you begin putting, continue to putt, even if you are standing on someone’s line. • The first golfer to hole out should hold the flagstick and replace it. • Never park a golf cart on the front side of the green; park it as close as possible to the point of exit from the green, closest to the next tee. • When riding in a cart, after hitting a shot, keep your club in your hand. Replace it in the bag only after the cart has stopped at its next position. • Last but not least, if you are close to the hole and have your ball marked, and someone hits out of the bunker, be a first-class groupmate and rake the bunker for them. This will cut out the in-between time of waiting for them to rake the bunker, and then walk to their ball and mark it and get ready to putt.
The marshals and golf professionals monitor the pace of play and want to help you enjoy your round and those behind you. There may be a need to nudge you to improve your pace. Please know we are there to assist you. Golf is meant to be a relaxed, peaceful sport that can take your mind off of a long work week! If you take these few suggestions and implement them into your future rounds, you will find yourself ahead of pace and ability to focus purely on those lowering golf scores!

1930-1950 The Lean Years In 2023, Atlanta Athletic Club will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The club was founded in 1898 by a group of 65 Atlanta businessmen who enjoyed playing sports and social activities. This article is the ninth in a series entitled “125 Years: The Legacy of Atlanta Athletic Club.” The purpose of the series is so that members may become familiar with the history and heritage of the great club to which they belong.
Portraits of Former Club President, Scott Hudson
In 1928, one year before the start of the Great Depression, the AAC bought an undeveloped tract of rolling land across Second Avenue from East Lake and hired Ross again to build the No. 2 course. It opened to much fanfare on May 31, 1930, but the growing financial crisis quickly made it apparent that the AAC, like most clubs in America, was going to have to struggle to remain solvent. Membership declined from 1,250 to 500. Dues were reduced to seven dollars, but few members could afford to eat at the club. Many credit former club president Scott Hudson, who served as a director from 1915 to 1946, with the club’s survival. Under Hudson, the board began a “spark plug” program to help generate new membership by “scouring the city for eligible men who might become new members and help hold the club together.” Lewis F. Gordon, chairman of the new membership committee, had a regular feature in the Club Times highlighting the committee’s successes. But there were significant losses as well. Paul C. Maddox claimed to be the only member to join the club twice: “I joined at a time when all businesses were at risk for failure. I figured that instead of having a good time at the club, I needed to work even harder
at my business, so I resigned. Once things became better, I knew I could always come back.” Born in Danville, Kentucky, in 1870, Hudson became a member of the AAC at the age of forty-one and dedicated his life to the club. In the midst of the Depression, the AAC found itself with new properties, a decreasing membership, a million-dollar debt, and barely enough money to furnish the new downtown club on Carnegie Way. Hudson became more of a club manager than president and found numerous ways to save money. The May 1940 issue of the Club Times reported: “The Pencil Committee has insisted that all pencils be cut in two and that only one be allowed to a foursome, which they say shall result in a savings of 87%, or $1.98 for the year.” Gene Branch once said of Hudson, “He actually saved the Atlanta Athletic Club. During the Depression, it would have undoubtedly disappeared.” This conclusion certainly is reflected in a story that J. Ross Hanahan told of Hudson: “He went down to C&S Bank and told Mr. Henry Heinz, who was a member and vice president of the bank, that they couldn’t pay. Mr. Heinz extended the loan on one
condition—that as long as Scott was president of the club, he would renew the loan.” On June 3, 1937, the club hosted a testimonial dinner to honor Hudson’s many years
eventually grow again. The club that emerged from the Depression was strong and vibrant, and golf was now clearly the main focus. Resources were once again poured into improving the facilities, but the growth was temporarily halted during World War II. The members, however, did their part for the war effort. In 1942, the Club
of tireless service. Colonel Robert P. Jones, Bobby Jones’s father, succeeded Hudson in 1937, and he continued to reduce the club’s long-term debt while enhancing the properties in the midst of the Great Depression. The Colonel joined the AAC in 1902, and served as a director for more than thirty years. In June 1938, Jones began a newsletter to aid in communication between the members, the officers, and the staff, naming it the Club Times. Member Merriell Autrey described another important innovation: “Somewhere after 1930, they put in slot machines, which were legal. My good friend Alva Maxwell told me that when he left the club as treasurer in 1948, the club did not owe any money and had $350,000 in government bonds and about $250,000 in cash. He said the slots did it.” The creativity and fierce loyalty that Hudson, Jones, and other members showed to the AAC helped it survive and
Times reported, “There will be no dances for the balance of January. This gives members an opportunity to get rest from holiday activities and to use money that they might have spent at club dances for Red Cross subscriptions or Defense Stamp and Bond purchases.” The board also encouraged members to carpool to help ration gas and tires. By the end of the war, the club was in solid financial condition, and in 1950, a new wing, designed by the architectural firm Stevens and Wilkerson and built by J. A. Jones Construction Company, added a modern locker room and grill for men and a new terrace for dining and dancing to East Lake. The renovation was prompted by the U.S. Women’s Amateur slated to begin at East Lake on September 12, the club’s first, but not last, national championship.

B i t sy G ran t The Mighty Atom WR I T T EN BY J E F F CHANDL EY, D I R ECTOR OF T ENN I S
Known as the “Mighty Atom” Bitsy dominated tennis in the south during the Depression. He began playing tennis at the age of 9 years old and watched his father win numerous southern titles with another AAC member and Hall of Famer Nat Thornton. At 5 feet 4 inches he was the smallest American to win a championship on the international circuit. A right hand retriever, he was able to beat heavy-hitting greats such as Don Budge. After beating Don Budge, he became known as “Itsy Bitsy the Giant Killer”. Between 1930 and 1941, Grant was ranked nine times in the U.S. Top Ten. In 1937 was ranked 6th in the world. In 1935 he never lost a match on clay and won 8 out of 11 tournaments that year. Grant won the U.S. Clay Court Championships in 1930, 1934 and 1935. Grant was a stand out on the U.S. Davis Cup team 1935 – 1937, helping the U.S. regain the prize in 1937. During WWII he served in the Pacific and letters to his wife indicated he fought many months out of a foxhole. After returning home from the war he dedicated his time to providing for his wife and knew that being a high level tennis player would take too much time away from his wife.
Grant continued to compete as a senior, winning 19 U.S. singles titles on all four surfaces. His last title came at the age of 65 in the 1976 Hard Court Nationals. Bitsy Grant was inducted into the AAC Hall of Fame in 1995, and will remain one of our most prominent tennis members. The Bitsy Grant Tennis Center was named for him in 1954 and is one of the largest public centers in the Atlanta area. Grant was inducted in the “International Tennis Hall of Fame” in 1972.
