A Year of Change and Champions A LETTER FROM THE GOLF COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
As we transition into the Fall golf season at the Atlanta Athletic Club, I would like to take a minute to send our membership an update from the AAC Golf Committee. Back in March of this year, our long-time Director of Golf, Rick Anderson, retired after 32 years of service at the AAC. I hope that most of you were able to wish Rick a fond farewell after many years of excellent leadership at our fine Club. Rick was the consummate professional, and he left a tremendous legacy for the next director to follow. David Sheppard and the Board of Directors were challenged with conducting a national search and identifying qualified candidates to fill some big shoes in our Golf Department. We were looking for an individual that had passion and knowledge for leading a well-established golf department, but also someone that would bring renewed energy and a great vision to our overall golf experience at the AAC. Well, I believe that we luckily found the perfect Director of Golf in Bud Taylor. Bud came to the AAC from Greensboro Country Club in North Carolina, where he was the Director of Golf on their golf facility, also covering 36 holes of golf. I hope most of you have encountered Bud in action at our Club because his service level and enthusiasm for the AAC membership has been refreshing to experience. Bud’s attention to detail has been evident in all facets of the golf experience at our Club, and his work ethic is contagious. We hope that you have noticed a significant difference in the golf presentation and service level from our entire golf staff. Bud has hired four new Assistant Golf Professionals (John Breedlove, Dan Shana, Glenn Scapin, and Eric Steele), and a new Director of Golf Instruction (Shawn Koch) and a new Director of Retail (Kristen Everard) - to provide our golf shop with the latest apparel and style. As you know, this has been an exciting, yet challenging, year with all of the various golf events, tournaments, and continued protocols – especially as we navigate this continued pandemic. The entire AAC staff has done a great job adjusting to these new standards and procedures to ensure that members continue to enjoy a safe environment while on campus at AAC. The staff also did an outstanding job while the AAC hosted the KPMG PGA Championship. I hope that our membership was proud to see the praise that our golf course and the entire staff received from the PGA and the national media – the golf course was outstanding. Thank you to all of our members for sacrificing two months of hitting off of mats on Highlands. We had the opportunity to deliver excellence in course condition rather than “good”, and the world recognized this excellence – and this is a credit to our outstanding membership. Throughout the remainder of this year, tournament play will continue to be a highlight for the golf membership with continued strong participation in virtually all events. The Men’s Invitational in both the Spring, and the upcoming Invitational for the Fall have experienced full participation. The Club Championship for both Men’s and Women’s programs have been well attended. Congratulations to Nick Cassini and Ava Merrill for their victories in their respective Men’s and Women’s Championships divisions, and congrats to Brett Barron for earning Low Professional honors. Their victories are quite the accomplishment considering the outstanding golfers that
participate in these Club Championship events. Interest in the AAC Junior Golf Program continues to be strong with over 300 junior golfers participating in instruction, daily clinics, weekend Par 3 events, and a multitude of golf tournaments. Congratulations to Ava Merrill and Bruce Murphy for their victories in the Junior Club Championship this year. Wow…Ava has now won five straight Junior Championships while also winning four straight Women’s Club Championships. This was Bruce Murphy’s second victory at the Boy’s Junior Champion. Congrats to all participants! As we embark on our Riverside Renovation Project, I want to encourage our membership to keep a very positive and encouraging mindset towards a successful project. Past renovations to Riverside (17+ years ago) resulted in today’s Riverside course which we have all grown to love and cherish. This Riverside Renovation Project will further enhance the beauty and playability of Riverside. During the renovation period, the golf department will be available to assist with reciprocal golf arrangements at a selected number of courses in the area. My last order of business is to continue to encourage first- class etiquette for all members of our outstanding Club. Our responsibility as a membership is to maintain a high level of decorum while on campus at AAC, including being mindful of wearing proper attire, especially while on our golf courses and using our practice facilities. This etiquette also includes monitoring pace of play, repairing ball marks (even additional ball marks), filling divots, and raking bunkers. Our responsibility as a membership is to care for “our” golf courses with the focus on leaving the conditions better than we found them on each hole. I hope that each of you enjoy the Fall weather and that you enjoy the golf courses as the weather begins to change. Thank you for all the support and encouragement you have afforded Bud Taylor and his new staff during their transition to our outstanding Club. Thanks for all of the support and encouragement that you have afforded Bud Taylor and his new staff as they have made the transition to our outstanding Club. I have always been told that the best part of the membership experience is the people that you encounter at the AAC each day. We have the friendliest membership and most encouraging staff under David Sheppard’s leadership. It should make us all proud to be members at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Sincerely, Brad Kuehn Board of Directors Golf Committee Chairman

AAC Club Championship Results The Club Championship is the premier competitive event on our tournament schedule, and one of the most difficult club championships to win in the entire country. The winner must overcome a demanding, championship golf course set up as well as an elite field of competitive players. This year, 91 players participated in the event with 28 players competing in the championship flight. The weather was fantastic each day despite the torrential downpours we experienced earlier that week. Due to the soft conditions, the courses played very long forcing players to hit longer approach shots into the greens. After three grueling days of championship golf, Nick Cassini was crowned men’s Club Champion, besting the field of amateur players with a score of 211 (5 under par). Brett Barron was the Low Professional in the championship shooting a score of 203 (13 under par). Ava Merrill is this year’s women’s Club Champion with her two day total of 148 (4 over par). Meanwhile, Scott Wallace won the two day scratch division with a 143 (1 under) and Matthew Dreher won the Stableford division with a total of 82 points. We thank all the participants, caddies, and spectators who made our Club Championship such a truly special event!

THE WORLD'S GREATEST AMATEUR GOLFER Bobby Jones In 2023, Atlanta Athletic Club will celebrate its 125th anniversary. The club was founded in 1898 by a group of 65 Atlanta businessmen who enjoyed playing sports and camaraderie. This article is the sixth in a series entitled “125 Years: The Legacy of Atlanta Athletic Club.” The purpose of the series is so that members may become familiar with the history and heritage of the great club to which they belong.
1916 Club Times Cover of Bobby Jones US Amateur
In 1911, at the age of nine, Jones won the AAC’s Junior Championship by overcoming sixteen-year-old Howard Thorne, 5 and 4, in the final, but Jones was not yet enamored of the sport. That changed when Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, on their way to the 1913 U.S. Open at Brookline (an event won by Frances Ouimet), stopped at East Lake to play an exhibition match with Stewart Maiden and Willie Mann, then head professional at Druid Hills Golf Club. The match so impressed Jones that he was inspired to polish his game. Later that year, while playing with Perry Adair, he shot an 80 for the first time. In August 1916, Jones won the Georgia State Amateur at the Brookhaven course of the Capital City Club by defeating Adair. That win presented him with an opportunity to compete in his first national championship, the U.S. Amateur at Merion Cricket Club in Philadelphia, where he lost to Robert Gardner in the third round. Between 1916 and 1922, Jones was a student at Tech High School and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), where he completed a degree in mechanical engineering. Throughout this period, he played in dozens of tournaments but did not capture a national title. Jones enjoyed his best round at East Lake while playing with his father, Tess Bradshaw, and Forrest Adair Jr. on September 16, 1922, a week after Jones lost to Jess Sweetser at the U.S. Amateur at Brookline. The next year, while studying for a second bachelor’s degree in English literature at Harvard University, he defeated Bobby Cruickshank in the playoff at the 1923 U.S. Open at Inwood Country Club in New York. Jones wrote, “I broke through at Inwood, and since then things somehow have been different.” When he returned to Atlanta on July 17, he was greeted at Brookwood Station and paraded home. A week later, the
AAC hosted a dinner for five hundred guests at East Lake to honor Jones. Mayor Walter A. Sims and Jones’s father, called “the Colonel,” as most lawyers were in this era, gave speeches extolling Jones’s “sterling qualities.” From 1923 to 1930, Jones won thirteen major championships. In A Golf Story, Charles Price explained, “From 1923 on, then, it was Jones against anybody; Jones against everybody; Jones, in fact, against the field.” One incident during this period made Jones famous for his sportsmanship. In 1925 at the U.S. Open at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts, Jones’s actions were widely hailed by his contemporaries. On the eleventh hole in the first round, his iron shot put his ball in the tall grass. After he addressed it, the ball moved slightly, prompting Jones to call a penalty stroke on himself. Even though USGA officials urged him to reconsider because no one had seen or was sure what had happened, Jones refused to relent. Gene Sarazen, who was competing, later said that it was the “greatest display of sportsmanship I’ve ever witnessed.” Jones ultimately lost by one stroke in one
of the event’s best finishes. Years later, in 1955, the USGA established the annual Bob Jones Award for distinguished sportsmanship in golf. It is considered the USGA’s highest honor.

What a beautiful time of the year around the tennis courts. We are in full swing with our ALTA tennis and all our teams are playing hard to win a spot in the ALTA City Playoffs. Good luck to all our teams. We have a very busy October with several special events. On October 1, we will be hosting a Continuing Education Unit for area professionals. The indoor courts will be closed from 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on that day so our AAC professionals and local professionals can receive their continuing education points. All certified professionals must complete a required number of continuing education classes to remain certified from the USPTA and PTR. Two of our AAC professionals, Car- men and Seth, will be presenting during the morning classes. On Friday October 15 we will host the Northside Hospital “Tennis Against Breast Cancer”. This event attracts 450 tennis players from the area to the AAC to raise funds for research to fight cancer. This is a large event and we are thrilled to be part of this great cause. All of our tennis courts will be used for the event from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

FALL FUN AT THE TIMBERS!
We are excited to be entering Fall with the kids here at AAC! We have some awesome events planned for them and we are excited to be able to enjoy the cooler temperatures outside! As always, if you have any questions please feel free to email me or stop by my office in the Timbers Loft! Stefanie Arrington 770-368-7109 | sla@aac1.org Timbers Drop-In Care vs Event/Camp We absolutely love having your children here with us! Please understand that! However, there are limits we must operate under by Georgia law to be able to continue running. Please be mindful of these limits because we could be audited by the state and we don’t want to lose our license to run Timbers and our other programming. • Children can only be here for a max of 4 hours per day and a total of 10 for the week. • These hours DO NOT include events or camps such as Fun Before 1 and Friday Flicks. • So for example your child can be here Tuesday for drop in for 4 hours, Wednesday for drop in for 4 hours, and Saturday for drop in for ONLY two more hours. They can ALSO be here in the same week for Friday Night Flicks. • There is a 10-minute grace period. After that, you will be charged time and a half. • During drop in care the parent must stay on premises. • During events/camps parents can leave the premises.
We have two awesome days of Day Camp fun for the kids who are out of school! There will be tons of FALL THEMED activities. Registration will be limited! Sign up as early as possible!
SUNDAY FUNDAY HALLOWEEN PARTY October 31st 12:30-6:30 $50 for Full Day | $25 for half
